In Season Ingredients: December
Each month I also plan to share an illustrated list of in-season ingredients for easy reference. Eating seasonally, and opting for local and organic produce where possible, is at the core of the slow food movement - something I’m passionate about. I’ll also be sharing recipe ideas for things I like to make during this Yule time of year, particularly as we head towards the Solstice on the 21st.
December is a month where root vegetables and brassicas continue to dominate, bringing earthy flavour and wholesome texture to plates. Citrus season is coming into its own with clementines abundant in time for Christmas too, while tropical fruits add essential colour and sunshine in the kitchen. Although their popularity is slipping still further according to the BBC, brussels sprouts will be on my shopping list this week alongside beetroot, chestnuts, kale and chicory, and I’ll be sharing some of my go-to recipes for this time of year next week!
